Competition: Only one week until the World Cup!

– – – This competition is now closed! Thank you to everyone who entered – – –
Just ONE MORE WEEK TO GO!! Nobody could possibly be as excited as I am, the in-house German at Applydea. Not that I know any of the player’s names or even which teams qualified – oh NO – I’m just in it for the fun, the games, and the male players. Vain? Call me what you wish, but nobody celebrates football like a clueless German.

Back home, we have a lovely “new” tradition called “Public Viewing” – an organizer puts up a big screen at a big square in a big city, local businesses join with beer and snack stalls, and fans flock together, wearing ridiculously-sized sunglasses and fake mohawks in the traditional black-red-gold (the colours of the German flag). Then everybody watches the game and gets horrendously drunk.

Here is a snap from the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin at the 2004 World Cup:

Hard to believe there is a 26 x 65 x 11 meter gate hiding behind that screen and advertising banners…

There was even debate in Germany whether the government will change laws about noise protection and prevention after 10 pm – with some of the live games broadcast at night-time in Europe, even the legislative powers in Germany have to succumb to what can only be called the football-mania of the general public. No other sport in Germany comes even close to football in terms of popularity and implementation of exceptional rules.

What’s not to love about all this?! Or, let me put it this way: If I was against it, it could really ruin my mood for a continuous 4 weeks in the summer. If you can’t beat them….

The winner will get a pair of brand new microfibre tips – I will pick one lucky winner on Monday!

Carla is originally from Germany, so she definitely sees the practical aspects of the Maglus. She also really enjoys discovering the awesome things some people can do with it. Huge fan of languages, music and ardent observer of cats in and around Dublin (for lack of her own).
