Art and Mental health – Yvonne J Foster

We’ve a guest blogger this week, a lovely friend and user of Maglus – Yvonne J Foster. Yvonne is a Brighton based artist and designer. Using iPad, photography, collage and her general scribblings, she creates her own world. We think Yvonne’s work is very special and the story behind it is even more inspirational.

Read on and enjoy looking at some of her beautiful pieces…

Hi, Yvonne here. I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and what I do. So…here goes!

I simplify portraits of people and remove all their complications. I break down images into each component part, shape and colour. I love to disappear into my work and get caught up in the details.

I also use art as a means to process my thoughts and emotions. In 2011 during a breakdown I began to document events using altered photographs, words and layered images. I didn’t have a way to describe what I was feeling or the mental pain I was experiencing, so I took photographs, drew pictures and used whatever words I could.

Since then I have worked on many collaborative projects promoting arts for health, positive attitudes towards mental health and suicide awareness.

Creating artwork is essential to my wellbeing; my frame of mind informs the work that I create. I am either expressing my feelings and emotions or leaving them behind and creating my own idealistic world.

Examples of my work are included throughout this post. This is just a selection of some of the artwork I regularly create.
