What is Drawing?

The term drawing is applied to works that vary greatly in technique, making it difficult to define. Simply put, a drawing is a graphic representation by lines, tones or colors of an object or idea.
Drawing is in effect the basis of all visual arts.

There are many different reasons why people draw – to visualise thought and work something out, to provide a pattern to follow or give instructions on how to make something, to describe or record something. However the most basic reason people draw is for the pleasure and satisfaction it gives them!

Here at Maglus, we champion the Stylus and the advance of digital. Art and technology are areas that continue to develop and progress. However, we understand that at the root of this, lies the basic starting point – drawing.

Don’t worry if you’re a novice at art or digital art. We want to use this weekly blog as an opportunity to share some tips and tricks to help you along the way. So we’re encouraging you to put pen or stylus to paper and start making some marks.

Let’s kick things off with something REALLY simple. We’re using an App called Sketch Book and a Maglus Stylus with original tip on an iPad mini. I’m working with the classic black version, but they all work the same! Sketch Book is a free App but I’d recommend buying the Pro version if you like it. You’ll get a bunch of extra features and it only costs €3.99.

Like we said, drawing is basically made up from lines and marks. To get you guys started, I’ve used the most basic technique of ‘line drawing’ to create a house….

Now to add some bricks and a door number…

We’ll need a path leading up to the door. And a fire lighting for the cold evenings…

Plus a garden of course…

With some birds.

There are tons of drawing Apps available. We chose to work with Sketch Book for this particular exercise as it’s compatible across all major platforms. We wanted to make sure all Maglus users could join in this activity. Experimenting with different Apps and techniques can take some time. But learning the various features is all part of the fun!
